Wildman for the win

We have announced the winner of our “Win £10,000 worth of brand development” competition as Chris Wildman. Following a series of “dragons' den” style interviews with several Yorkshire-based food and drink producers, we came to choose the Wildman brand as the clear winner.

Chris Wildman will work with our five expert teams of strategic design, pack science, graphics, legal and digital within our company to create and develop his existing Wildman brand which includes handmade cured meats, charcuterie and Yorkshire chorizo.

Based near Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales, Chris is a fifth-generation farmer, grazier and butcher and his team have recently been the base for the filming of a BBC2 programme about artisan food producers featuring two-Michelin starred chef and presenter Tom Kerridge. This was a trigger to entering our competition, as Chris explains:

"We felt all eyes were on us, and in particular our brand and I realised it needed to tell our story. Although we are a relatively small business and producer, I think we have really special quality products with years of experience as butchers and graziers. We need a brand to represent our authentic heritage and premium quality." The family farm boasts approximately 600 Swaledale sheep, plus over 100 cattle including the superb Craven Longhorn as well as Sandy Black pigs."

The company is a worthy winner and rich for ideas and inspiration. We will define the Wildman brand then help to bring it to life via a packaging redesign for some of the hero products. We'll then support Chris, through our five specialisms to develop his brand, products and ultimately his business."

One of the main benefits of doing your grocery shop online is buying in bulk, letting the delivery van, not you, take the strain. In high cost but low interest areas, such as cleaning products and frozen food, you can actually reduce packaging waste by buying the bigger pack you might otherwise not have wanted to transport home. And because the product doesn’t have to be displayed on shelf, refill packs, or even relatively unbranded packs can be bought and decanted at home.

With British charcuterie still in its infancy, Chris's strong business plan and offering grabbed the attention of the judges at Sun Branding Solutions. Paul Bean, our Group Managing Director explains "Chris is a true local food evangelist and his passion for his produce is infectious. He runs courses and welcomes people to Town End Farm whilst creating and producing his produce and running the farm shop, tearoom and butchery. The sausages and cured meats we will be working with follow traditional methods including a traditional recipe, using real skins and linked by hand. We will work with Chris to make sure Wildman becomes the leading brand champion within the British charcuterie sector."
