How hard can it be to make a cup of tea? The challenges of everyday packaging

We’ve all run into a negative experience when it comes to packaging; from the irony of trying to open a pack of scissors without a pair of scissors, to abandoning attempting to open bacon packaging with your hands, and reaching for the nearest kitchen knife to get the job done.

Here at Sun Branding Solutions, we’re focusing on our ageing population and have created a whitepaper that looks at how designing for older people can actually offer a better experience for everyone. As part of this focus we invested in GERontologic test equipment, which simulates some of the physical restrictions that come with old age.

We pitted our team against the challenge of making a cup of tea. Simple enough right? But first they had to remove the packaging from the tea, biscuits and milk using two age simulation accessories.

The first was a tremor simulator; special gloves with a variable control unit which simulates EMS impulses. The second was to pick from a set of glasses that simulated the following eye diseases:

  • Macular degeneration
  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
  • Unilateral retinal detachment
  • Diabetics retinopathy
  • Retinitis pigmentosa

Two team members took the challenge, and each took over two minutes to open the packaging. Watch how they got on below:
